• A FIRST ATTEMPT ON A NEW METAPHYSICS, unsigned and undated, circa 1981.

• Black and blue fountain ink on semi-absorbent A4 paper, torn from an A4 pad.

• Single-sided pages, numbered 1-21, 23, (and experimental) 16, 17, 17.

• Condition: Aged, toned paper, some small cracks at the edges, page 22 missing.

• Price: $1,000 US

In this document, the young philosopher surveys the subject of "proof" (certainty), with reference to the concepts alone. He describes “apparently insurmountable difficulties”, then turns to consider the possibilities in faith. Yet one “cannot hereby escape the difficulties”. He observes that “[t]here is nothing that does not support my outlook on life”. This last realization indicates a major theme of the opening chapters of his 2022 published metaphysics, Everything, Briefly: A Postmodern Philosophy. The attempt at this new metaphysics is abandoned at page 23.

Provenance

Library of Thomas O. Scarborough. Few, if any, metaphysicians have offered their preparatory notes during their own lifetime. Item #30 in the author’s personal library.

Literature

Referred to in Everything, Briefly: A Postmodern Philosophy, page xvii, as the first of several “trial runs on a metaphysics”. On page 6, the original problem is described: "A philosophical idea may seem to be persuasive for a time. The hard part is explaining why it and every other philosophical idea are so completely disputed and always have been."

Catalog Note

The author provides one page of handwritten reflections on this draft.

ITEM #40 DESCRIPTION

SCARBOROUGH, Thomas O. Autograph manuscript, unsigned, comprising A REVISED ATTEMPT ON A METAPHYSICS, circa 1981. Seven pages in ball-point ink.

• A REVISED ATTEMPT ON A NEW METAPHYSICS, unsigned and undated, circa 1981.

• Blue ball-point ink on white A4 paper, loose sheets.

• Double-sided pages, first 4 of 7 pages numbered 1-4.

• Condition: Good. Written with heavy pressure.

• Price: $500 US

In this document, The young philosopher returns to the “apparently insurmountable difficulties” of his first attempt at a new metaphysics. This short second attempt considers that we employ “a false mode of thinking”. Instead, “[t]here is no proof [certainty] until proof has been demolished.” Although this is vague, it finds full expression in the author’s 2022 published metaphysics, Everything, Briefly: A Postmodern Philosophy. On page 237, "a certain mode of thought" is responsible for the failure to solve core philosophical problems. The philosopher goes on to consider “the illusion of the passage of time”.

Provenance

Library of Thomas O. Scarborough. Few, if any, metaphysicians have offered preparatory notes during their own lifetime. Item #40 in the author’s personal library.

Literature

Referred to in Everything, Briefly: A Postmodern Philosophy, page 237, where major problems in philosophy trace to “a certain mode of thought”.
